Iced tea has been cooling people off since at least the 1800s. It got a bump in fame at the 1904 World’s Fair thanks to a clever salesman, but it’s roots stretch back through hot summers, front porches, and handwritten cookbooks with family recipes from the 19th century.

So, who added the lemon?

Long before Arnold Palmer ever stepped up to a tee box, people were already mixing iced tea and lemonade. A 1922 cookbook 'Home-Made Beverages and American Drinks by M.E. Steedman’, featured a “lemon tea” recipe that called for equal parts of each, and by 1954, Sunkist was promoting the combo in a national ad. Still, it took the swagger of a golf legend to give it a name. As the story goes, Palmer casually ordered his favorite mix in Palm Springs, and a nearby guest said, “I want what he’s having.” Boom: a drink icon was born.
