Delta-8 THC Safety: How Much THC Can You Consume Safely?

With Delta-8 THC brands popping up all over the place, the marketplace can be a bit overwhelming whether you’re a virgin or a devil lettuce dabbling pro. Face it, we all get confused sometimes! The rapidly developing market and wide variety of products, such as capsules, concentrates, gummies, tinctures and vape cartridges, means that it’s not always clear what dosage is right.

Although Delta-8 THC hasn’t been evaluated by the FDA, years of research has given us a better understanding of how cannabinoids work, in general, their side effects, and how the dosage can impact your experience. Delta-8 THC’s rise in popularity means that consumers are beginning to understand the effects for themselves, and the right dosage for them.

Unfortunately, there is no “one size fits all” dosage. We wish it was that easy! Everyone’s bodies are different - how you react to Delta-8 will differ from how your friend reacts. Your level of tolerance all depends on a variety of factors, such as your age, metabolic rate, and body fat percentage.

So, how do you know what dosage of Delta-8 THC is safe to consume? We’ve put together a guide to Delta-8 THC safety, giving you the know-how to find the best dosage for you.

Are Delta-8 THC and CBD the same dosage?

As THC and CBD are both cannabinoids, you would think that the dosage is the same, right? Well, that isn’t the case. The dosing method for CBD doesn’t apply to other cannabinoids as it doesn’t not impair your sensory perception in the same manner. Delta-8 THC, on the other hand, is mildly psychoactive and can significantly change how your body interprets different sensory inputs.

Let’s take this back to the basics. Delta-8 THC is structured differently that CBD, which means that the effect it has on your brain also differs. Unlike CBD, Delta-8 THC can get you high, but it’s estimated to be about half as potent as Delta-9 THC. Don’t let that fool you, though! It still has powerful psychoactive properties that can be pleasantly intoxicating when the proper dosage is taken and can REALLY mess with your head if you’ve taken too much.

So, if you’re used to taking THC, and you’re sensitive to the effects of Delta-8, start with a low dosage and go slow. Something like 5-15mgs is a good place to start. And if you’re- new to the THC scene, we always recommend taking Delta-8 THC with CBD in an even lower dosage, like 5mg, until you get used to the side effects. Check out our Gummy Sampler Pack, which is perfect for experimenting and building up your dosage with confidence (cutting a gummy in half or even quarters is A-OK!).

How potent is Delta-8 THC?

The strength and volume of Delta-8 THC in cannabis products differs with every company, so there’s not going to be a lot of consistency brand-to-brand. For example, some tinctures contain 750 mg of Delta-8 THC in a 30ml bottle, while others may use a 60ml bottle. If you want to find out how many milligrams of Delta-8 THC is in a single serving, all products should have a recommended dosage on the label to allow users to estimate how much they need to consume for the desired results.

When it comes to liquid products like tinctures and vape cartridges, the potency of Delta-8 THC is measured in milligrams per milliliter (mg/ml). For example, in our Strawberry Lemonade Tincture, there is 3,000 mg of Delta-8 per bottle, or 25 mg/ml per serving. One serving is enough to feel the relaxing effects for even pro users. So, if you haven’t consumed Delta-8 THC before, we recommend starting with half a dropper of liquid.

Capsules and gummies come with a set dose of Delta-8 THC in each one, so you don’t have to measure the dosage. You can gradually increase the number of capsules or gummies you take to meet your dosage requirements. Remember, start low and take it slow.

The Delta-8 THC dosage chart

Delta-8 THC is about 50% less potent than its cousin, Delta-9 THC, however, that doesn’t mean that it won’t cause side effects. You can still take too much Delta-8 THC and find yourself stuck to the couch and unable to move. Here is a Delta-8 THC dosage chart to help you determine what dosage to start with:

Tier 1

5-15 mg per serving

Tier 2

15-45 mg per serving

Tier 3

45-150 mg+ per serving

There is no quick way to find the right dosage to suit you, but there is a safe way to do it. Try a little and slowly increase the dosage until you are comfortable with the effects. If you ever feel overwhelmed, take note of the dosage, and lower it next time around.

Important factors to consider

It’s not just your weight that you need to consider when finding your ideal starting dose. You should also think about:

  1. Your body mass – If you have a greater body mass, you will require higher doses than someone with a small body mass.
  2. Your tolerance – Some people have a naturally higher tolerance to Delta-8 THC, and it’s worth noting that your tolerance can increase rapidly.
  3. Your desired results – Why are you taking Delta-8 THC? Do you want to relax and unwind, elevate your mood, or feel more sociable?

How long does Delta-8 THC take to kick in?

Depending on the form of Delta-8 THC, the time it takes to kick in varies – sometimes up to two hours! If you’re vaping, the effects usually kick in between 5 and 20 minutes. If you’re ingesting Delta-8 THC in the form of tinctures, then it can take 1-1.5 hours. If you take capsules or gummies, the effects will typically kick in 1-2 hours after consumption.

You need to be careful with capsules and gummies, as they can make you think that you need to take more, when in fact, the effects just take a long time to set in. Capsules and gummies are slower reaching the bloodstream, so the effects are often delayed.

We recommend waiting 2 hours before consuming another dose of Delta-8 THC, just to be safe.
